Strong biosecurity underpinning Prosper 2050

A strong biosecurity system is a key foundation for prosperous primary industries. The Queensland Biosecurity Strategy 2024-2029 is integral in achieving our goal of growing the primary production sector to $30 billion by 2030.

The strategy unites governments, industry and community in a common goal to protect primary industries and our economy, preserve our environment and biodiversity and maintain our enviable Queensland lifestyle. Plant and animal pests and diseases have widespread economic and social impacts that can affect everyone – especially our farms, livestock, crops, and natural environment.

The strategy guides whole-of-system action to ensure our primary industries stay strong, productive, and competitive well into the future.

The strategy supports the vision of Prosper 2050 by:

  • Focusing on preventing biosecurity threats before they arrive. This means anticipating threats through surveillance and horizon scanning, focusing on prevention and preparedness and working together to quickly detect and respond to outbreaks to minimise impacts.
  • Working together – under the strategy farmers, industry groups, government, and communities are encouraged to collaborate. By sharing knowledge, resources, and responsibilities, biosecurity challenges can be tackled more effectively.
  • Building resilience and making sure farms and businesses are prepared to handle biosecurity risks. This includes training, better technology, and smarter practices to reduce the impact of any threats.
  • Encouraging innovation and technology through encouraging the use of new tools like drones, sensors, and data systems to monitor and manage biosecurity risks. This helps farmers stay ahead of potential problems.
  • By protecting our biosecurity, we’re also protecting Queensland’s reputation for clean, green, and high-quality produce. This opens up more markets and opportunities for farmers, ensuring long-term prosperity.
  • Supporting community awareness as everyone has a role to play in biosecurity. The strategy aims to educate and involve stakeholders and local communities to uptake good biosecurity practices – so we’re all on the same page when it comes to protecting our land and livelihoods.

Through the Queensland Biosecurity Strategy 2024-2029 we look to safeguard what we grow and produce, so we can pass on thriving farms and industries to the next generation. It is a team effort to keep Queensland’s primary industries strong, sustainable, and ready for the future.
